Personality: As the token non-bender in Team Avatar, it would be easy for Asami to show resentment over her lack of bending abilities. Not once during the four seasons of the series does this come up, however. Instead, Asami has fostered her own natural abilities and found her niche within the group, and though she is a non-bender, without her, Team Avatar wouldn't be where it is today. Initially, many might have mistaken her as a helpless "daddy's girl", but it is now evident that she is an independent woman capable of forging her own destiny.
Growing up, it was easy for her talents to be encouraged. Asami was born into privilege, the only daughter of Hiroshi Sato, a wealthy industrialist, and his wife. Although she never met her mother (who died when she was a baby at the hands of criminal benders), she seems to have led a happy and loving childhood. She takes after her father and developed an interest in new and budding technologies, making her a valuable asset to the team whenever they were in need of an engineer. Growing up in such a privileged household, Asami also has impeccable manners. She presents herself as a polite, well-spoken young lady, and does not shy away from most social situations. Given by the way in which she carries herself and the fact that she never leaves the house without a meticulous makeup job and a polished outfit, it's easy to see that she's a woman of high society. Asami is also highly intelligent and possesses a mind geared for problem-solving, which comes in handy during a pinch.
Her response to losing her mother to the Agni Kai Triad, compared to her father's response, highlights the differences in how father and daughter dealt with the tragedy. Unlike Hiroshi, Asami does not hold onto grudges. Whereas Hiroshi developed a hatred of all benders and supported the Equalists, Asami realized that it was dangerous to apply blanket generalizations to a group of people based on her own bad experiences. She loves her new friends, who just happen to be benders, and rejects her father's pleas to join him in the fight against all benders. She tries to approach conflict with a level-headed, reasonable mind rather than let herself be blinded by emotions. Asami is not a person easily swayed by the temptation for revenge or self-satisfaction. Even when her own father tries to kill her in order to fulfill his Equalist agenda (and thus ends up in prison), rather than be angry at the betrayal, Asami feels sad. She grieves the loss of her father, because she did lose the father she knew and loved, but has trouble letting herself be angry at him. His betrayal affects her deeply, however, and initially, she refused to step into the Republic City prison because it reminded her of him. She also never visited him. Nor did she respond to his letters. It is only until recently that she was able to bring herself to visit him and confront him. During the first visit, she attempted to confront him with anger, but that merely left her feeling worse than before. Resolved to try another method, she visits him again and hears him out. Here, we are given another glimpse of Asami's sympathetic and forgiving nature. Although she doesn't know if she can ever truly forgive her father, she wants to try. She yearns to have something resembling the relationship she once had.
Along the same lines, we see that the trait Asami values most in relationships is honesty. When Mako cheats on her with Korra, she doesn't become jealous. She's hurt. She's hurt and angry towards Mako that Mako couldn't be straightforward about his feelings for Korra and that he had to go behind her back. Remarkably, in a move that is incredibly mature for a teenage girl, she never once blames Korra. She tells Mako that she likes Korra, and despite the relationship drama in this love triangle, their feelings towards Mako never come between the two girls' friendship.
In fact, once both Korra and Asami have moved on from having their hearts broken by Mako (whom both of remain very close friends with), the two girls come to rely on each other more and more. Korra expresses her gratitude towards Asami's friendship, telling her that she's "never had a girlfriend to hang out with before, except for Naga." As the series progresses, this friendship becomes closer and more precious, and by the end of book 4, the two women have entered a romantic relationship. Their development is subtle-- Asami is the only one Korra remains in constant contact with while she's away, for example, and Asami's compliments towards Korra's appearance is met with a blush. The canon point I have chosen is right before they have begun officially dating, because I'd like to be a little nice to Asami for kink bingo! She will be coming in with a big ole crush.
Although Asami is typically levelheaded, she is not above pettiness and sarcasm. Asami is not afraid to be blunt and voice her disapproval at what she perceives as injustice. She is generally a gentle soul, and has the patience of a saint, but when you do make her angry, she has no qualms about showing it. Once she has set her mind to an ideal, she is relatively stubborn and even fearless in facing obstacles in her way, to a degree. She isn't reckless, however, and though she has a great deal of confidence in facing authority, she prefers to work in ways that don't endanger her or her friends. When it comes to schemes or outsmarting the bad guy, she prefers to work behind the scenes. As is shown on multiple occasions (blatantly disregarding state-mandated curfew, handcuffing an important entrepreneur to have a private chat with the President), she is not above breaking the law for what she perceives as a good cause.
She also doesn't know the meaning of giving up. Even when her company is on the verge of collapse (and thus, she's basically broke), she remains optimistic on the surface and is proactive at looking for new business ventures. She's willing to do whatever it takes to save her company, even if it means partnering up with the less-than-savory and extremely eccentric Varrick.
